In a surprising development, Congress MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy today heaped praises on his party's rival and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the latter's steps to prevent the spread of the deadly coronavirus in the country.
He said that the PM had not only taken effective steps to prevent the virus in the country, but had also helped other countries in their fight against the virus.
He also thanked Modi for announcing a massive Rs 20 lakh crore economic stimulus package.
Reddy said all these in a letter that he wrote to the PM on the issue.
In the letter, Reddy also brought to the notice of the PM the problems being faced by the weavers and the handicraft workers of the state due to the ongoing lockdown.
He said that according to the 2019 statistics, a total of 31.45 lakh families in Telangana comprising 45 lakh people were dependent on the handicrafts profession.
He urged the PM to sanction funds to the sector and help the families.
He told the PM that most of the families of the weavers and the handicraft workers were very poor, and that 67% of these families earned less than Rs 5,000 per month, and 26.2% less than Rs 10,000 per month.
He said that even that meagre income of the workers had ended now due to the ongoing lockdown as the government had suspended the exports of their products.
He urged the PM to announce a special package for the workers and protect them from hunger.
He urged the PM to give them Rs 3,000 each for three months, and free rations from the civil supplies department of the state.
He also urged the PM to give sarees and dhotis to the 23 crore BPL families of the country, and hand over the contract to the weavers.
