JNU Incident: Osmania University Witnesses Tension

Tension prevailed in Osmania University when Akhila Bharathiya Vidhyarthi Parishat (ABVP) activists obstructed a students' protest against the arrest of students of Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University over the past week.

OU students launched an agitation on Saturday against the arrests, burning an effigy of the Central government. That caused friction with ABVP activists, who staged protests themselves.

It may be recalled that last week some students of the JNU, Delhi, organized a meeting allegedly opposing the hanging punishment to Afzal Guru and making anti-India slogans, and that snowballed into a serious issue. The Delhi Police then arrested the student union leader of the JNU, resulting in the incident acquiring serious political overtones.

Protesting the arrest, AISF, SFI and PDSU activists organized a rally in Osmania University today, and ABVP students obstructed the rally, leading to an altercation between the groups.
