Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, on Wednesday, charged the union and state governments of failing to alleviate the hardships faced by the hapless farmers in Andhra Pradesh, who he said are reeling under the blows dealt by successive natural calamities.
Talking to media persons after meeting the union agricultural minister, Sharad Pawar, in New Delhi, Jaganmohan Reddy revealed that he had urged the union minister to provide an adequate relief package to the farmers of the state, so that they can cope with their problems.
The Kadapa leader added that Pawar had assured him that he would take his demands to prime minister Manmohan Singh.
Jaganmohan Reddy also stated that the government has forgotten that the development of the state is possible only if the farmers of the state are comfortable. Their present state, of facing problems after problems, will hinder overall development, he said.
The Kadapa leader further added that cyclones and excessive rainfall had left the state's farmers caught in a debt trap, and that they were resorting to committing suicides.
Jaganmohan Reddy added that doubts over the sincerity of the government’s commitment to the farmers’ welfare were increasing due to the meager relief package announced.
The former MP added that he had tried to meet the prime minister to discuss the issue but had failed to get an appointment.
