YSR Congress Party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy today announced that Krishna district would be renamed NTR district after the TDP founder and former chief minister of undivided AP who hailed from Nimmakooru village in the district.
He made this announcement as soon as he stepped into the Nimmakuru constituency in the district.
The late NTR's close relatives alleged some corrupt activities by Telugu Desam Party leaders in and around the former CM's village during Jagan's visit. They pointed out that in the guise of the "Neeru-Chettu" program, a lake bed had been dug up to a depth of 50 feet incurring an expenditure of Rs 8.5 lakhs, and a tractor load of sand was being sold at just Rs 350 and a truck load of sand at just Rs 600. This illegal activity was being indulged in by the TDP leaders, they complained.
Jagan said that he was told about another Rs 50 lakh scam in the village, too. This centered around sand mining and forged bills, he said.
The villagers hailed Jagan's renaming decision saying it would be a fitting tribute to NTR. Jagan also assured the members of the Nandamuri family and the people of Nimmakuru village at large that the YSRCP would ensure all-round development of the village.
Ironically, IT minister Nara Lokesh has adopted Nimmakuru.
