HYDRAA Commissioner A V Ranganath today visited the Kamuni and Maisamma cheruvus and issued directives for the protection of the lakes and addressing encroachments.
The Commissioner however assured local residents of Raghavendra Colony that only structures built after July 2024 would be demolished, and that structures predating that date, whether legal or illegal, would remain untouched. He instructed officials to remove any recent encroachments and take measures to protect the lake bunds.
The Commissioner also directed the developers of Vasavi Sarovar not to proceed with construction unless a 17-metre-wide nala was constructed as mandated. He emphasized that the nala was a critical link between the Kamuni cheruvu and the Maisamma cheruvu, ensuring proper water flow between the lakes.
GHMC officials informed Ranganath that earth movers and lorries had been deployed to remove water hyacinth weeds from the lakes. During this process, part of the lake bund was accidentally damaged, they said, and assured the Commissioner that corrective action would be taken immediately to preserve the bund while continuing efforts to clear the invasive hyacinth.
