Telangana Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K T Rama Rao today asserted that the government was taking every possible step to ensure that Hyderabad would not face a drinking water problem.
Claiming this in the State Assembly during a debate on droughts and drinking water problems with the onset of summer, KTR said that the government had brought the Godavari waters successfully to the city to cater to the drinking water needs, and that steps were being taken to address the drought.
Against the present 660 MGD requirement in the city, the government was able to supply 350 MGD, and was pressing in tankers to supply the rest, he said.
The minister also said that as the drinking water problem would aggravate during April and May, the government had geared up to address it.
KTR added that the government had asked for 12 lakh workers to be engaged under the employment scheme, and from 8 am to 12 noon and 4 pm to 6 pm to avoid the scorching heat. Besides that, officials were directed to provide tents, drinking water and first-aid kits at the places of work.
The minister added that rural governance would be strengthened soon by the recruitment of 1,778 village secretaries. While 1,000 of these posts would be filled up directly, the rest would be through promotions, he said.
