The S R Nagar police arrested two women on charges of robbery, and recovered 120 tolas of gold ornaments from their possession.
The women were identified as Maha Devi Rajesh Kalal alias Sunitha, and Pooja Suresh Sakat.
The police said that on April 4 they had received a complaint from B Ram Narayan of Shanthi Bagh lane, S R Nagar, stating that a woman had joined their home as a maid on April 2. He said that while some of the residents were out of the house on some work on April 3, the maid threw chilli powder in the eyes of his parents and committed robbery in his house and fled with a huge quantity of gold ornaments.
The police quickly swung into action and formed five teams to nad her. They checked footage from some 200 CCTV cameras up to the Nampally and Secunderabad railway stations. Upon getting clues, they nabbed Maha Devi and Pooja Sakat near the Sanath Nagar bus stop and interrogated them.
During interrogation, it was revealed that the accused were habitual offenders, and had earlier committed two similar offences in Mumbai and Bangalore. They confessed that in the last week of March 2023 they had come to Hyderabad with a plan to commit offences. They started searching for jobs as maids in rich houses, and contacted passersby in the Nampally and Begumpet areas.
On April 2, Maha Devi joined as a maid in the house of Narayanan and worked on that day. On the next day, in the morning, Narayanan went out on some work along with his wife. After they left, Maha Devi threw chilli powder in the eyes of the aged parents of the complainant and robbed about 150 tolas of gold from the house and fled. Later, she hired an auto and went to Nampally and boarded a train.
Based on the clues they got, the police apprehended the woman near Sanath Nagar and recovered the stolen ornaments from her.
The police said that Narayanan allowed Maha Devi to join his house without any verification. Pooja Sakat tried to join the house of the brother of Narayanan, but they asked her for identification documents, and she did not produce any, leading to them rejecting her. She however helped Maha Devi in the commission of the offence.
The police requested the public to verify the details of any workers/maids who came seeking work at their houses / work places, and collect their credentials, to avoid criminals.
