The Telangana government is keen on getting it inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 28, and is awaiting a confirmation from the PM.

The Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) will create a record when it becomes operational on a 30 km route in the first phase from November 28.

Stating this while replying to a question in the Telangana Assembly on Monday, IT Minister K T Rama Rao said that this was because all the metros in the other parts of the country had begun operating only a 11 km route whereas the Hyderabad Metro would start off on a 30 km route.

KTR also said that since the Hyderabad Metro was one of the biggest in the world taken up under the PPP system, the state government was keen on getting it inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on November 28. The state had already requested the Prime Minister in this regard, and a confirmation was being awaited from the PMO, he added.

KTR said that as many as 57 trains were required for the full operation of the Metro, and all of them were ready. He added that the HMR would become fully operational on all the routes by the end of next year.

The HMR project was being built at an estimated cost of Rs 3,000 crores, and the Centre's share was Rs 1,458 crores, KTR said. Rs 2,240 crores had already been spent so far, and the Centre had released Rs 958 crores.

He refuted the claim of the Opposition that there was a delay in the execution of the project.

As regards the second phase of the MMTS, KTR said that the work was progressing rapidly, and an amount of Rs 817 crores had been allocated. He said that the Raidurgam station had been linked with the Yadadri station, and was being modernized and developed.

The MMTS service would be extended from Ghatkesar to Yadadri, he added.

The government was also actively considering expansion of MMTS Phase III to the towns close to Hyderabad, the minister disclosed. He said that the stretch of 21 km between Secunderabad and Ghatkesar had been taken up in MMTS Phase II. It would be further extended by another 32 km to cover the distance from Ghatkesar to the Raigir railway station, which would be developed as Yadadri station under Phase III, he said.
