27-year-old Rachita Gupta Kanodia, who had been reported missing by her family in Hyderabad recently, has been found dead with multiple injuries on her body, at a popular trekking route in rural Panvel of the Raigad district in Maharashtra.
As per reports, Rachita, a frequent adventurer, had come alone to Panvel on November 25, to go on a three-hour trek atop a hill to reach the old Prabalgad fort.
She is speculated to have slipped and fallen from the hillock, resulting in her death.
As per the police, in September this year, Rachita had successfully hiked Prabalgad as part of a trekking group's adventure. However, she came back to do the same spot alone on November 25, for reasons unknown.
She had booked a flight from Hyderabad to Mumbai, and took a taxi from the airport to reach Thakurwadi village in Panvel, they said. It takes over three hours to reach the fort on top of the hill. Rachita was supposed to return to Hyderabad on November 29.
But when her family failed to establish contact with her, her father lodged a complaint in Hyderabad. The Hyderabad Police then investigated the CCTV footage found at the domestic terminal of Mumbai Airport, and managed to track the taxi in which she had gone to Panvel for the trek.
On December 5, three days after sweeping the region, the cops finally located her dead body, which had multiple injuries due to the fall, under the hill. The cops said that the victim's bag, accessories, mobile phone and cash were also recovered from the spot where the body was found.
The police reportedly have ruled out murder at present. The body was formally handed over to the Hyderabad Police and taken back to her family's residence.
The Mumbai Police issued a caution to all trekkers and urged them to travel in groups and stay safe.
