Hundreds of youth and sports enthusiasts participated in the 5K Run from Charminar to Barkas Playground organised by the Hyderabad City Police in the Old City on Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion near Charminar, Deputy Chief Minister Mahmood Ali praised the City Police for the initiative, and hoped that such moves would revive the lost glory of the Old City of Hyderabad in the field of sports.
He reminded that the Old City had produced several national players, especially in football, in the past. However, the Old City had been scoring a blank in sports for the last 2-3 decades.
He urged the Sports Authority of Telangana, GHMC and other sports organisations to take steps to revive sports in the Old City.
City Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy said that the 5K Run was aimed at promoting the concept of citizen-friendly policing.
"We are citizens in uniform and you are police without uniform," he told the participants amid loud cheers.
He asked the youth to support the City Police and share in the responsibility for peace and development of the area.
Sports personalities including badminton legend Pullela Gopichand, table tennis player Naina Jaiswal, body builder Mir Mohtesham Ali Khan, and Purna and Anand (who climbed Mount Everest) were among those who participated in the event. (INN)
