Noted human rights and anti-caste activist U Sambasiva Rao, popularly known as U-sa, died of the coronavirus in Hyderabad today.
He was 70, and breathed his last while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Barkatpura, where he was admitted for diarrhea.
Rao was born in Brahmanakoduru of Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, and was attracted to revolutionary ideologies since his student days. He became a farmers' leader in Motkur of Nalgonda district in 1982, and led several agitation programs against social oppression, caste and class discrimination, and loot for several decades. He was part of a lot of major movements for the upliftment of dalits, and also played a crucial role in organising a massive agitation on the electricity low voltage problem.
