Two types of messages from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) regarding water bills are creating confusion among citizens.
One message warns consumers about cyber fraud, stating that the Board does not send WhatsApp messages, APK files, or links related to bill payments or disconnection notices. "If you receive such messages from unverified sources, do not install any APK file. Kindly report such incidents to the Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930," the message says.
In contrast, another message reads: "Dear consumer (name), your water bill No. ____ for CAN No. ____ for May 2023 to June 2025 has been generated on 06.07.2025. You can download your bill at https://erpP.hyderabadwater.gov.in. Stay connected with us via WhatsApp by giving consent through this link: https://wa.me/919154170968?text=Hi--HMWSSB.2025.07.06."
These conflicting messages are leaving consumers confused, and they are urging the Board to clarify the situation through an official media statement.
"What exactly is this consent for? Is it to abolish the earlier provision of 200 gallons of free water per month?" one resident asked. He also asked how a bill could be generated without taking a meter reading.
