A GO to the effect that the government would liquidate weavers' loans to the tune of Rs. 87 crore was issued on Monday.
Besides this, the government has formulated certain new measures to mitigate the sufferings of the poor weavers including those handling the power looms in the state.
Under the Rajiv Gandhi Mission program, the state government would provide work to the poor weaving and tailoring communities in order to facilitate them eke out their own living.
As part of this program, the government has agreed to extend the tailoring work for stitching school uniforms to jobless men and women who belong to the tailoring communities in Andhra Pradesh.
Speaking to media persons at the state Secretariat on Monday, Textiles and Weavers' Welfare Minister P Shankar Rao assured the Tailors Unions' representatives, who had submitted a memorandum to him earlier, that tailoring job would be entrusted to their workers with a view to provide employment to them.
The minister also spoke towards meeting the demands of the poor weavers' families whose strength was said to be 5 lakh in Andhra Pradesh.
