The biggest municipal corporation of the State, the GHMC, has been rattled by a fake birth and death certificate racket.
The racket has come to light following the decision of the authorities of the corporation to block around 31,000 birth and death certificates which were reportedly issued without any evidence.
The opposition parties are claiming that the callous attitude of the officials of the corporation in the issuance of the certificates had resulted in the scam.
GHMC Commissioner D S Lokesh Kumar ordered a vigilance inquiry into the entire scam. He also asked the applicants who obtained the blocked certificates to submit evidence to support their claim and upload them online. He said that the corporation would unblock the blocked certificates after conducting a field level inquiry, and issue fresh certificates.
The director of the AVDM Prakash Reddy said that the corporation would launch an inquiry from Wednesday.
As per the existing rules, the health assistants who work under the control of assistant medical & health officers register the birth and death details in the corporation limits and issue them.
The cancellation of the certificates has now become a cause of concern for those who applied for them.
