Responding to a report in the media today that four children of the Bansilalpet area were administered injections which had expired leading to their conditions turning serious with vomiting and sweating, Health Minister Dr C Laxma Reddy today directed the Director Of Medical Education Dr Ramani to visit Gandhi Hospital and inquire into the issue, and take immediate action against the delinquent staff.
As per the minister's directive, Dr Ramani visited Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad and inspected some wards and enquired about the health of the children who suffered after being given the injections.
The DME suspended two staff nurses - Shobha and Sunitha - for administering expired injections to the kids negligently, and issued a memo to junior doctor Navin Singh.
Later, Ramani said that they were not using outdated or expired medicines or injections in the hospital. She said that some outsiders had brought the medicines in question into the hospital to malign the image of the hospital. The state government did not supply outdated or expired medicines, she said, and added that steps would be taken to avoid such incidents from recurring.
"We have constituted a two-member expert committee to inquire into the episode and report in two days, and will take further action upon receiving the report," Ramani said. "The children are doing well now."
It may be mentioned here that four children of Bansilalpet suffered complications including vomiting and sweating after injections were administered to them. Upon this being brought to their notice by the angst-ridden parents, the doctors of the hospital treated them for the new problem, and the children are now out of danger.
