Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president D Srinivas on Sunday urged the Central government to expedite the report on categorisation of the scheduled castes in Andhra Pradesh. The report has been pending for the past few years.
In this connection, the PCC chief wrote a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging his intervention, and asking him to introduce a constitution amendment bill in the winter session of parliament.
Srinivas said that the State government had already sent the report of the Usha Mehra Commission on the categorisation of the scheduled castes of Andhra Pradesh into A, B, C, and D groups to the Union cabinet. However, the cabinet is yet to take any decision on the report.
The Centre has set up the commission at the instance of the State government after the Supreme Court struck down the classification of the SCs ordered by the Telugu Desam Party government.
Srinivas said that the categorisation would enable a large number of the scheduled castes to get their due share of reservation.
