City Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma spoke about Mudassir Kamaram, a Ph. D student of EFLU who committed suicide on Saturday.
In a media statement on Sunday, the Commissioner said that Kamran had taken the extreme step on Saturday due to personal differences between him and his friend Vasim Salim, another Ph. D student. Reportedly, they were good friends and roommates, but, subsequently, fell out with each other because of personal differences. Vasim Salim had even reportedly complained to the university authorities about repeated physical and mental harassment being meted to him by Mudasir Kamran.
On January 29, Prof. Vizra of EFLU had given the deceased a memo asking him to explain his misbehaviour. On March 1, Prof. Vizra rang up Osmania Unversity Police Station and informed him that Mudassir Kamran and Vasim Salim were quarrelling, after which a patrol vehicle went to EFLU and brought both the students to the police station.
The chief warden, Vedasharan, also went to the police station along with them. Vasim Salim made a written complaint against Mudasssir about the harassment, which he said includied assault. However, the local Sub-Inspector of Police Madhusudhan Reddy counseled both the students, who were taken back by Vedasharan.
Vedasharan also gave an undertaking that he would look into the matter and sort out the differences. On Saturday evening, the door of the deceased Mudassir Kamran's room was found bolted from inside. When the door was broken open, it was found that Mudassir Khan had committed suicide by hanging. He was shifted to Andhra Mahila Sabha Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
While lodging the complaint, some students alleged harassment and inaction on the part of the university authorities as well.
A case of Crime No. 79/2013 u/s 306 IPC was registered, and investigation was taken up. The postmortem was completed, and the body is being dispatched to Mudassir Kamran's native place at Parigam village of Phulwama district of Jammu & Kashmir.
Senior officials, including the Commissioner, and the Director General of Police (Law & Order) S A Huda, visited the hospital, and discussed the matter with the university authorities including the Vice Chancellor.
The local Kashmiri youth who were present there, were assured of all possible help and cooperation from the administration and police. (INN)
