Cases Against Vijayasanthi Remain: EC

CEO views video footage, says cases will not be withdrawn against either legislator.
Hyderabad | 9th July 2010
Chief Electoral officer I V Subba Rao on Friday asserted that the suo moto cases registered against Medak MP Vijayashanti and Sangareddy MLA Thurpu Jayaprakash Reddy would not be withdrawn.

Talking to media persons, Subba Rao censured both the legislators for the violation of the Model Code Of Conduct.

The two legislators had been arrested and released on bail for making inflammatory remarks at a time when the Code was in force due to the forthcoming by-elections to 12 assembly constituencies in the Telangana region.

Subba Rao said that the EC had viewed video footage of the Medak MP's speech and found it to be in violation of the Code.

The CEO said, "The Election Commission has taken a serious note of the violation of model code of conduct by Ms. Vijayashanti."

He opined that she should not have made such comments as 'a responsible political leader'.

Subba Rao also said that the EC was not satisfied with the explanation offered by Congress MLA Jayaprakash Reddy. He said that the cases registered against both the legislators would "take their natural course."
