DMK, the ruling party in Tamil Nadu, announced today that it was supporting the Congress for the upcoming Telangana Assembly elections.
The decision was announced by the party at a press conference held at its headquarters in Chennai.
DMK workers and fans have been directed to work to ensure the victory of the Congress candidates in the Telangana elections.
The Congress thanked the DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin for its support.
The Congress and the DMK are in alliance in Tamil Nadu. The two parties are also a part of the Opposition INDIA alliance formed at the national level against the Bharatiya Janata Party. It is in this context that the DMK has decided to support the Congress for the Telangana elections.
This is the first time outside Tamil Nadu that the DMK is partnering with the Congress for an election.
YSRTP leader Y S Sharmila also announced her support to the Congress. The party even withdrew from the electoral fray.
The elections in Telangana will be held on November 30, and the results will be announced on December 3. The Congress and the BRS are the primary adversaries for the 119-member Assembly. The BJP and the MIM are also trying to make an impact.
