The Congress stunned the ruling BRS and emerged victorious in the Assembly elections held on November 30, the results of which were announced today.
The Congress came to power after almost ten years despite being the party that granted statehood to the Telangana region. It achieved absolute majority with 65 seats in the 119-member Assembly (64 of its own and one of the CPI, an electoral ally). The BRS was down to 39 seats from 88 in 2018.
The BJP won eight seats (up from one in 2018) while the MIM won seven - its usual seven.
Six ministers - Errabelli Dayakar Rao, Koppula Eshwar, Puvvada Ajay Kumar, Srinivas Goud, Niranjan Reddy and Indrakaran Reddy - were defeated in the election.
Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao sent his resignation through his Officer on Special Duty (OSD) following the Congress' win, BRS working president K T Rama Rao said at a press conference at Telangana Bhavan.
KCR, who contested from two Assembly constituencies, won in Gajwel and lost in Kamareddy.
Meanwhile, reacting to the results, TPCC president Revanth Reddy said that Pragathi Bhavan would now be renamed "Praja Bhavan", that he was dedicating the victory of the Congress to the Telangana statehood martyrs.
He said that the Congress would work to improve the lives of the poor, and would also take the suggestions of the opposition parties. He also said that democracy would be restored and the people's lives improved in the days to come.
