The Andhra Pradesh government, on Wednesday, filed a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court's
orders upholding the Central Administrative Tribunal's (CAT) decision to set aside the appointment of director general of police V Dinesh Reddy as the Head of Police Force (HoPF).
In the Special Leave Petition, the state government appealed to the apex court to quash the High Court's orders, on the grounds that Dinesh Reddy was appointed on the post based on his tenure.
It may be recalled that a few days back, the state High Court had set aside Dinesh Reddy's appointment, and directed the government to adhere to the CAT's order and send a new list of senior-most IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) within 2 weeks to facilitate the appointment of a new DGP.
The court had also imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 on the government, for filing a petition.
Disposing of a petition filed by IPS officer Gautam Kumar, who said that the government had violated merit and seniority prescribed by Central government in the appointment of the top post, the High Court bench declared Dinesh Reddy's appointment as DGP "invalid".
The court directed the government to retain Dinesh Reddy as the in-charge DGP till alternative arrangements are made. (INN)
