The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has invalidated the appointment of K Aravinda Rao as the Director General of Poilce (DGP). The government was directed to appoint a new DGP by June 9th.
However, Aravind Rao has been permitted to continue as the DGP till his successor is employed.
This verdict of the CAT comes in response to the petition filed by Home Secretary P Gautam Reddy (who was denied the DGP berth twice) on 9 September 2010, challenging the appointment of his junior K Aravinda Rao as the DGP.
Gautam Reddy had claimed to be the more eligable candidate for the post as he was one of the most experienced IPS officers. He had said that the government had overlooked his seniority and awarded the job to Rao.
He pointed out that the position of the DGP was given to Aravinda Rao despite that fact that he had only 10 months of service left, while Gautam himself would retire in October 2012.
DGP Aravinda Rao was unavailable for comment as he is busy with the situation in Puttaparthi.
