One of the six primary accused in the Delhi rape case, Ram Singh, was found dead in his cell at Tihar Jail in New Delhi this morning. He seems to have hanged himself from the prison bars using his own clothes.
Ram Singh, 33, was the driver of the bus in which the horrifying gang rape of a 23-year-old medical student took place last year, which eventually led to the girl's death. The incident caused the whole nation to go up in arms against the serious lack of safety for women in the country. Five of the accused, including Ram Singh, were currently being tried by a fast track court, while another, said to be the most brutal among all six, is being tried by another court under juvenile law, owing to his being a few months shy of 18 years.
Meanwhile, suspicions are being raised as to how Ram Singh could have managed to take his own life in a high-security prison like the Tihar. While officials deny all charges of having left him alone, they are unable to explain why they could not stop him.
Ram Singh's father, however, feels that his son was murdered. "They tell me that he committed suicide. He did not commit suicide. He was murdered. He was beaten up, stripped and hanged. He accepted that he had committed the crime and he accepted that he could face a death penalty. Even I agree that he should be executed for what he did. Then why would he commit suicide?" he demanded.
Singh's father also told reporters of times when Ram Singh had been brutalised by his inmates, which resulted in the police having to shift him to his own cell.
The family of the rape victim, however, feel cheated out of justice, as do thousands of Indians who were rather looking forward to watching them hang.
