In a tragic incident today, an eight-month pregnant woman from Mallapur died after she was denied admission into five private hospitals in Hyderabad.
Identified as Pavani, the woman was rushed to a hospital in Mallapur after she complained that she was feeling short of breath. However, the hospital staff said that she would not be treated there. None of the other four hospitals she was taken to admitted her either. As a result, the woman reportedly suffered for five hours before passing away in an ambulance. The child could not be saved either.
The apathy of officials did not end here. After her death, managers of various crematoria in the city refused to perform her last rites as she was pregnant. They asked the bereaved family to "separate" the mother and the child to perform the last rites. Since no hospital would be ready to perform the surgery necessary to separate the two, Pavani's family took her body back to their residence.
This was when local authorities in the Mallapur area intervened and arranged for her to be cremated at a local cemetery.
Meanwhile Medchal-Malkajgiri Collector Swetha Mohanty has ordered an enquiry into the horrific death of the woman. As part of this probe, district DMHO Dr Mallikarjun went to the residence of the victim to gather information about today's events from her family.
