Under the revised National Agricultural Insurance scheme, three districts, Prakasam, Nellore and Warangal, have been notified by the Central government for implementation of crop insurance for major crops in the Rabi season. The scheme will be tried on a pilot basis in the Rabi season, and depending on its outcome, will be expanded to other districts.
Initiating this scheme, Agriculture Minister Y S Vivekananda Reddy has signed the file to mark his takeover of his ministry today.
Later, speaking to media persons, he said that in case of loanee farmers the scheme is compulsory, and for non-loanee farmers it is on a voluntary basis. The loan sanction alone is the criterion for insurance coverage.
The Centre has decided to implement the scheme in 50 districts of 21 states in Rabi 2010-2011. Considering the problems and requirements of the farmers, the scheme has been modified.
Further, the minister stated that he was determined to serve the public, and would follow in the footsteps of his brother Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and make attempts to deliver what YSR wanted to for farmers.
