The amount will be used for beautifying the city, according to the GHMC.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, on Friday, informed the media that chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy sanctioned Rs. 125 crore for the Convention On Biological Diversity (CBD) scheduled to be held at HICC from 1 to 19 October.
Addressing a press conference at the GHMC Headquarters, GHMC mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain and commissioner M T Krishna Babu said that the amount would be utilised for the upgradation of 125kms of roads from the airport (to star hotels) and from the railway station to the convention centre; and also for sanitation, remodeling of junctions, renovation of 35 fountains, and the beautification of the city. 35 new fountains would also be constructed as part of the city's beautification, they said.
Krishna Babu said that nearly 10,000 to 12,000 delegates and 210 ministers from 190 countries, and heads of seven to eight nations, are expected to participate in the event. He said that a special vigilance team has been formed to monitor sanitation and debris dumping on roads, and to check illegal hoardings. He said that 23 commercial organisations, including SBH, GMR and Mantri, have come forward to maintain 35 fountains, costing Rs 25 lakhs to Rs. 40 lakhs per fountain.
The State Bank Of Hyderabad has agreed to sponsor a camp in the month of August to promote Indian culture, at a cost of nearly Rs. 75 lakhs, he said.
He also said that the Central government has not released a single paisa for the event so far. The GHMC had requested the state government to release Rs. 400 crores for the event, and Rs. 125 crore has been allotted, he said.
Krishna Babu said that the GHMC has instructed cable operators to remove cables hanging over road numbers 1, 2, 3 in Banjara Hills immediately.
Also, the Hyderabad Metro Rail has been directed to stop all road testing works and remove debris from the roads by the end of August, to facilitate the recarpeting of roads. (INN)
