Hyderabad Congress President Sameer Waliullah strongly criticized MIM MLC Rahmat Baig for his alleged threats against TPCC President Revanth Reddy.
Baig had reportedly threatened to attack Revanth Reddy's convoy after the latter referred to the AIMIM as a B-team of the BJP.
Sameer Waliullah condemned Rahmat Baig's "disrespectful behaviour", and said that Baig had stooped to the level of a rowdy by resorting to physical threats.
He said that Congress workers were capable of giving a fitting response if MIM workers engaged in such cheap tactics, but that the Congress did not endorse politics based on violence and intimidation.
He claimed that the Congress had never formed an alliance with the BJP for the sake of positions or power. He said that Baig was attempting to target the entire Congress party by highlighting an isolated incident from 2020 when some Congress councillors had formed an understanding with the BJP to seize the posts of municipal Chairman and Vice-Chairman from the BRS.
He said that the BRS and BJP had alliances in several municipalities to keep the Congress out of power. "Why did AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi continue his alliance with the BRS and not ask Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to sever his ties with the BJP in those municipalities? Further, the MIM never objected to the BRS supporting the BJP government at the Centre on several important issues like CAA, NRC, the Triple Talaq Bill or the elections of the President and Vice-President," he said.
Referring to Rahmat Baig as immature, the Congress leader said that instead of targeting the Congress, the MLC should first explain what his own party had done for the development of the Old City.
Sameer Waliullah highlighted issues such as declining literacy rates, high unemployment rates, and the lack of basic civic amenities in the Old City. He mentioned that the only public hospital available, Osmania General Hospital, faced funding shortages, forcing people to spend their hard-earned money on private hospitals, which interestingly were run by AIMIM leaders.
Sameer Waliullah also challenged Baig to explain how many poor families in the Old City had received the free double-bedroom houses provided by the State government. He alleged that a large number of poor families in the Old City lived in slums without proper facilities and were trapped under private financiers.
He also demanded an explanation for why the MIM had failed to secure Metro Rail connectivity for the Old City in the past nine years, despite claims of being an ally of the BRS and despite Asaduddin Owaisi's control over the BRS.
He said that Rahmat Baig lacked the stature to speak about the TPCC President, and was just attempting to divert attention from public issues by targeting the TPCC President. He warned MIM leaders to be cautious when speaking about the Congress and its leaders, claiming that they were fully capable of delivering a fitting response in the same language and tone.
