Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday claimed that the Congress party gave a major sacrifice to fulfill its promise of giving statehood to Telangana region.
Participating in road shows in the Jubilee Hills and the Khairatabad constituencies, Azad said that Telangana became a reality due to the personal interest of AICC President Sonia Gandhi.
He said that Sonia Gandhi and other leaders were aware that the party might face a rout in Seemandhra if the Centre bifurcated Andhra Pradesh. However, he said that Sonia Gandhi went ahead with the formation of Telangana to turn the 6-decade dream into a reality.
Azad said that the credit for the formation of Telangana goes to the 1,200 people who sacrificed their lives for the statehood cause. He added that only the Congress could develop Telangana, and that it would be made a model State in the country.
Congress candidates M Anjan Kumar Yadav (Secunderabad Lok Sabha), Danam Nagender (Khairatabad) and P Vishnuvardhan Reddy (Jubilee Hills) were also present. (INN)
