Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Tuesday inaugurated a Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) Housing Complex in Vijayawada.
The Chief Minister also said AP could be made hut-free by the year 2012. He said 16 lakh houses will be built by the end of this year, and 16 lakh by the end of 2012, in addition to the 51 lakh houses that were constructed from 2004 when the Congress came to power.
He added that the government has increased the money alloted for each house to Rs. 45,000 from Rs. 31,400 in rural areas, and to Rs. 55,000 from Rs. 43,000 in urban areas.
In the case of SCs and STs, the amount has been raised to Rs. 65,000 in rural areas, and to Rs. 85,000 per unit in urban areas.
These increased allocations will put a burden of Rs. 700 crore on the government this year, he said.
The CM said that the state government has constructed 1,068 school buildings at the cost of Rs. 35 lakhs each. He said this was done to improve the condition of government-run schools in rural areas, so that children of these areas can be brought to school.
State Minister G Aruna, K Pardhasaradhi and MP Lagadapati Rajagopal were among those present on the occasion.
