With a smile fixed on his face, Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) President K Chiranjeevi on Sunday was forced to beat a hasty retreat from a wedding function after being accosted by Telangana Rashtra Samithi activists.
Chiranjeevi, known as an 'integrationist', was accosted by the TRS activists when he went to Pullareddy Gardens at Champapet near L B Nagar to attend the marriage of former minister D S Redya Naik's second son on Sunday.
The TRS activists surrounded him and raised 'Jai Telangana' slogans. They also told him that since he was now in Congress, he should once again make his stand on Telangana clear. Some of the more optimistic activists demanded that Chiranjeevi extend his support to the separate statehood demand.
The PRP chief, taken aback by the hostility at a purely non-political occasion, chose to remain silent and give the TRS activists his most charismatic smile.
The smile failed to entice the TRS activists, who told him that he would be better off leaving the place due to his 'integrationist' stand. They alleged that Chiranjeevi was stalling the Telangana state formation by merging his party with the Congress.
The actor-turned-politician, at this time, chose to backtrack from the wedding ceremony mid-way, smiling all the while.
When he got into his car, Chiranjeevi said that any marriage should not be stopped due to his presence.
