Telangana DGP Dr Jitender today released the Annual Crime Rate Report for 2024, highlighting various aspects such as the crime rate, law and order, cybercrime and drug smuggling in the State.
Compared to 2023, the crime rate in Telangana had increased significantly in 2024, with a total of 2,34,158 cases reported this year - a 9.87% rise, he said.
The DGP said that the law and order situation had however further improved. "Law and order is under control in all areas except one or two. Strict action continues to be taken against drugs, with 1,942 drug cases registered across the State and 4,682 people arrested. Drugs worth Rs 142.95 crore were seized. Also, the police arrested 85 naxalites this year, while 41 other naxalites surrendered," he said.
The DGP also said that Telangana witnessed a 43.33% increase in cybercrimes this year. "A total of 25,184 cybercrime cases were registered. Of the money looted by cybercriminals, Rs 180 crore has been refunded. And the police have frozen assets worth Rs 247 crore," he said.
Jitender also reported that 85,190 cases had been registered after the new laws were implemented in 2024, and that under the "Zero FIR" system, 1,313 cases were registered through the judicial process.
The DGP said that 547 SIs and 12,338 constables were appointed this year. He also highlighted the public's response to the Dial 100 service, which he said had received 16,92,173 calls.
Addressing issues like police suicides in the State, he cited financial difficulties, personal problems and family issues as the main causes. "Some suicides were also linked to work pressures. Efforts are underway to address these concerns through family counselling for vulnerable police personnel," he said.
The DGP said that despite what the rise in the crime rate may indicate, the police authorities had done commendable work in handling law and order, cybercrime and drug-related offenses.
