The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) today lodged a complaint with the Telangana DGP about the "overzealous and illegal" cases being filed by the government and the police against BRS workers in the State, especially against the social media activists of the party.
In its complaint, the party said within four months of coming to power, the Congress government in the State was behaving in a manner that made a mockery of democracy. It alleged that those who questioned the government's policies and performance were being targeted by the government, and said that the latter was not able to tolerate criticism by the BRS leaders and activists.
"The police are filing cases with great enthusiasm when our party leaders make posts on the social media criticising the government. The police are also trying to hurt the morale of our activists by resorting to threats on the phone-tapping case, and terrorising them. The police are singing to the government's tunes, and showing great enthusiasm and grudge against the BRS leaders and activists. Such things are not done by a democratic government," the complaint said.
"Salwaji Madhava Rao, an activist of our party, was accused of posting on the social media against Congress MLA from Dharmapuri Adluri Lakshman. A case under the SC/ST Atrocities Act has also been filed against him with the help of a rowdy-sheeter named Sogali Tirupathi, and Rao is being mentally harassed by the police now. The entire Telangana community is angry with the police now," the BRS also said in its compliant.
"Governments are not permanent. No matter which government is in power, the police should work in a way that protects democracy and freedom of expression. But some policemen are working to appease the ruling party's ministers and MLAs by pressing their feet," the party alleged.
