In a setback to the move of the Road Transport Authority (RTA) to make the wearing of helmets a must for two-wheeler riders, the Hyderabad High Court today ruled that buying a helmet at the time of purchasing a two-wheeler was not compulsory.
It may be recalled that the RTA of Telangana was proposing to make it compulsory to purchase a helmet along with a two-wheeler.
The government pleader informed the court that a total of 92,164 cases had been booked against two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets. These cases were booked since June 2014, he added.
The court, however, advised the RTA to create awareness instead among prospective vehicle-buyers on the importance of buying and wearing a helmet while driving.
The court also advised the government to launch an awareness campaign on wearing a helmet for at least 15 days, and only then make wearing one compulsory.
The case was adjourned by two weeks for further hearings.
