The Election Commission of India has declared the unanimous election of Bhuma Akhila Priya of the YSR Congress Party to the Allagadda Assembly seat.
According to the ECI, both the independent candidates, Bala Gangadhar Reddy Sankepalle and Singam Venkateshwar Reddy, withdrew their candidatures on the last date for withdrawal on Friday. Therefore, by virtue of there being no other contestants, Priya emerged victorious in the election.
Priya's unanimous election had become evident as soon as both the independents in the fray withdrew their nominations. The TDP and the Congress had kept out of the contest following the tradition of not putting up candidates if the sitting legislator dies and his/her kin contests the by-poll.
Bhuma Akhila Priya is the daughter of Shobha Nagi Reddy, whose death in a road accident during the election campaign necessitated the by-polls.
The polling in the Allagadda Assembly constituency was scheduled for November 8. However, with Priya being the lone candidate, polling became unnecessary, and the ECI formally announced her election. (INN)
