Officials from the Department of Archaeology & Museums on Monday inspected the '
tunnel' unearthed while clearing a centuries-old graveyard at Purani Haveli in the Old City.
Ramakrishna, Deputy Director of Department of Archaeology & Museums, told media persons that it was difficult to give any concrete information on the 'tunnel' after initial inspections. He said that the department needed more time to probe it.
Ramakrishna said that it is difficult to enter the tunnel, since the entrance was only 2ft 2inch by 2ft in diameter.
The Deputy Director also said that its depth is between 15 to 20 ft, and added that dangerous gases could be trapped inside.
He said that it is unlikely that the hole could be a tunnel leading to the
Purani Haveli Palace or the
Golconda Fort.
Meanwhile, a local resident R M Khan claims that he was appointed by the Muslim Wakf Board as secretary of the Dargah & Masjid Committee.
Wakf Board inspector and auditor Mohammed Azmathullah denied that the board had formed any such committee, and said that the religious place is under the direct management of the Wakf Board.
Mutawalli Syed Shah Sharfuddin Ali Quadri briefed the members of the archaeology team over the history of the dargah and the masjid.
Quadri also expressed surprise that the Wakf Board illegally took over the management of the dargah and the masjid, but no official from the board was present at the time of inspection.
