Expressing concern over the recent attacks on journalists, the Andhra Pradesh Working Journalists Federation (APWJF) demanded that the state government take stringent action against those who hinder the freedom of the press.
Speaking on the occasion of World Freedom Of Press Day, APWJF president Shahabuddin Hashmi, along with APWJF general secretary P Dilli Babu Reddy, said that there should not be any restrictions on press freedom as per the United Nations General Assembly declaration.
They expressed anguish over the "growing attacks on journalists", and lamented that even inquiries were not ordered in certain cases.
"In the recent past, the attacks on journalists have been growing, and this could deprive people from the right to know facts," they said.
"If the government takes stringent action against those who attack journalists, such incident will not recur," they said.
They also demanded that the Information & Public Relations Department set up committees at all levels to check the attacks. (INN)
