The change of AP's leadership isn't complete yet. M Veerappa Moily, Congress general secretary in charge of AP party affairs, has gone on record saying that a Deputy CM's post will be filled by someone from Telangana. This is coupled with plans to have a leader from a backward community in the post.
According to Telangana activists, under the Gentlemen's Agreement at the time of formation of Andhra Pradesh in 1956, Telangana must get a deputy CM if the chief minister hails from any other region. AP had deputy CMs from Telangana earlier - K V Ranga Reddy (the first deputy CM of AP in 1960), J V Narasing Rao and B V Subba Reddy being a few. The practice was discontinued in the '70s, and this has led to discontent among Telangana leaders.
J Geetha Reddy and Ponnala Lakshmaiah are seen as contenders for the deputy CM's post, according to sources.
