The Legislative Estimates Committee, on Monday, directed officials to take steps to minimize the consumption of electricity by at least 20%.
According to sources, the directions were issued during the Committee's meeting held at Committee Hall - I in the State Legislative Assembly premises.
The committee, chaired by MLA Ch Muthyam Reddy, reviewed the performance of the municipal administration and the Urban Development and Energy departments. During the discussions, the members reportedly suggested that officials take immediate steps to save electricity by at least 20% to overcome the ongoing power crisis.
The Committee also expressed concern over the non-utilisation of central funds meant for renewable energy. Officials have been directed to take immediate steps in this regard. Sources say that during the meeting, GHMC Commissioner M T Krishna Babu had suggested that solar power be utilised in the city for purposes like street-lighting.
The Estimates Committee will meet again on Tuesday, to review the functioning of the departments of Civil Supplies, Consumer Affairs, Cooperatives and Agriculture. (INN)
