Scammers are continually devising new methods to defraud the public, with the latest tactic involving threats of imminent power supply disconnection. Recently, a retired journalist fell prey to this scheme, losing Rs 30,000 from his bank account.
A typical fraudulent message might read: "Dear sir, your power supply will be cut today after 7:30 pm due to last month's bill not being updated. Call immediately 8982757752 or WhatsApp 8125004052. (sic)"
Alarmed by the prospect of losing electricity, recipients often respond promptly, seeking clarification on outstanding amounts and payment procedures. The scammer then suggests a WhatsApp call, during which they instruct the victim to install a remote access application, enabling the fraudster to view and control the victim's mobile screen. Under the guise of assisting with bill payment, the scammer cautions against sharing OTPs (One-Time Passwords) with anyone, all the while siphoning funds from the victim's bank account.
The TSSPDCL authorities have noted a surge in such fraudulent activities. They clarified that their officials do not send messages threatening immediate power disconnection or request personal financial information. TSSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director G Raghuma Reddy said that the company also did not send website links through SMS for bill payments and that TSSPDCL employees would never solicit bank account or card details from consumers.
The Hyderabad police have issued advisories warning the public about these scams. Fraudsters often send bulk messages during the day, alarming consumers with threats of nighttime power disconnection. They then instruct victims to download remote access applications like Team Viewer QuickSupport, granting them control over the victim's device and access to sensitive information, including bank accounts and digital wallets.
To safeguard against such scams, consumers are advised to:
- Verify authenticity: Do not trust unsolicited messages or calls about electricity bill payments. Contact the TSSPDCL directly using the official contact numbers found on your electricity bill or the company's official website.
- Avoid sharing personal information: Never disclose bank account details, debit/credit card numbers or OTPs to unknown callers or through unsolicited messages.
- Refrain from installing unverified applications: Do not install applications suggested by unknown callers, especially those that allow remote access to your device.
- Use official payment channels: For bill payments, utilize TSSPDCL's official website or mobile application to ensure transactions are secure.
- Report suspicious activity: If you receive dubious messages or calls, report them to the local police or cybercrime authorities promptly.
