In a major breakthrough, Andhra Pradesh has become the second State in India after Gujarat to achieve 100% electrification of households as of June, 2016, as per a national survey report.
AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu appreciated the energy department via a teleconference, and urged them to set a target date to extend uninterrupted power supply to all households at affordable prices.
"As of May 2016, 35% of rural households in the States of UP, MP, Bihar, Odisha and Assam still lack access to one of the basic needs of man - electricity. This is a sad state of affairs for the nation. It is a matter of pride that Andhra Pradesh has achieved 100% electrification. Now all that remains to be done is to reduce the cost per unit of power," he said.
State energy department Principal Secretary Ajay Jain stated that the department was chalking out an action plan in coordination with the Technical Advisor to the Department Of Energy and Chairman of APTRANSCO Vijayanand, Chairman of APEPDCL M M Nayak, Chairman and Managing Director of APSPDCL H Y Dora, CEO of SECM A Chandrasekhar Reddy and all the functional heads of the generation, transmission & distribution sectors, and that the plan would be presented in the upcoming Collectors' conference.
Some of the points being looked at in the action plan are:
1. reduction of overall transmission & distribution losses to a single digit percentage by the end of the current financial year
2. reduction of the power procurement costs by at least 30-40 paise per unit, and
3. achieving 10% of the national target of generating 1,75,000 MW through renewable energy resources such as solar and wind by 2022.
