Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today asserted that Amaravathi was the only capital of Andhra Pradesh.
He made these remarks while addressing the media at the Kurnool Arts & Science College.
Gandhi said that AP should have only one capital, and termed the decision of the State government to have three capitals as completely wrong.
In a free-wheeling interaction, Gandhi spoke about a bunch of issues plaguing the once-prosperous State. He said that the Congress was fully cognizant of its promises for the truncated State in the AP Reorganisation Act 2014, and that the party would fulfil all of those promises if it came to power.
He specifically said that the Congress would complete the Polavaram project after coming to power, and ensure that all the benefits of the project reached the farmers of the State. He also added that the Special Category Status promised to the State would also be granted to it.
Gandhi also soothed the anxious farmers who had given their lands for the capital to come up at Amaravathi, vowing to protect them. Alleging that the political parties in the State had made politics a business with no concern for such common people who sacrificed to rebuild the State, he said that the Congress would protect the interests of the farmers and workers of the State.
Gandhi also condemned the alleged attacks on journalists in the State, terming them cruel.
When asked if the Congress would take the support of the YSRCP after the next general elections, Gandhi declined to comment on the issue, saying that the party president would take a decision on that.
He also claimed that his padayatra was receiving overwhelming response in the State, and that the Congress belonged to all religions, castes and people of the country, which is why his Bharat Jodo Yatra was proving so popular everywhere.
