Medical Education minister Kondru Murali, on Friday, announced that the state government would try to get each medical college in the state 50 additional seats.
Talking to reporters at the state Secretariat, Kondru Murali said that the Andhra Pradesh High Court has suggested to the Medical Council of India that it increase 50 seats each for Osmania and Kakatiya's medical colleges.
He said that the government would follow up the issue with the MCI.
However, he said, the government would try to ensure that at least 50 seats are increased in all the medical colleges of the state by 2013.
The minister said that currently, 12% of Arogyasri cases are being referred to government hospitals in AP. He said that by next year, government hospitals would treat nearly 25% of cases.
The minister also had a heated argument with some journalists after the former accused a section of vernacular media of resorting to "yellow journalism" to tarnish the image of chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and other ministers.
He threatened to take legal action against a few newspapers for publishing reports alleging that he had effected transfers in his department in exchange for bribes. (INN)
