YSRTP founder-president Y S Sharmila is reportedly in the race to be appointed president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee.
The Congress high command is currently focusing on AP. A meeting of AP Congress leaders will be held at the AICC on Wednesday. AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge, and party leaders Rahul Gandhi and K C Venugopal are scheduled to meet the leaders. APCC chief Rudra Raju and new in-charge Manickam Tagore have received calls from Delhi asking them to attend the meeting. The strategy to be adopted for the next MP elections are likely to be discussed at the meeting.
The high command is learnt to have decided to appoint Sharmila as president of the APCC. It is learnt that the matter will be explained to the AP Congress leaders, and that they would be asked work with Sharmila.
An official announcement on the same is expected to be made on the New Year day.
Sharmila has already held talks with the Congress leaders in the past. She had then decided to merge her party, the YSR Telangana Party, with the Congress in Telangana. The high command now reportedly wants to use her services in AP. The AICC leaders apparently feel that Sharmila can benefit from the craze for YSR in AP, and strengthen the party again.
For the unversed, before the bifurcation of united AP, there was a Congress wave in AP. After the bifurcation, however, the party predictably got wiped out. The then Congress party cadres shifted to the ruling YSR Congress Party.
The party has now started making efforts to re-establish its presence in the State, and is working on a strategy to revive itself before the next Lok Sabha elections.
