The Congress high command has appointed Y S Sharmila Reddy as the Andhra Pradesh Congress chief.
It announced in a statement that the incumbent PCC chief Gidugu Rudraraju had resigned from his post.
He was appointed as a special invitee to the Congress Working Committee.
At the time of Sharmila joining the party, Rudraraju had announced that he was ready to quit.
Sharmila had recently merged her party, the YSR Telangana Party, with the Congress. After forming her party in Telangana and undertaking a padayatra across large swathes of the State, in the run-up to the Telangana Assembly elections, after first announcing that she would be contesting or the Paleru Assembly seat, she suddenly announced that her party would not contest the elections, and would support the Congress instead.
A few weeks later, she announced that she would merge her party into the Congress.
Elections to the AP Assembly will be held in 3 months, and Sharmila has been entrusted with the responsibility of strengthening the party at this critical juncture by the high command. The Congress is pretty much non-existent in the State - after bifurcating the State, the party lost all its popularity among the people - and it is highly debatable if Sharmila will make any kind of impact. She is also currently busy with the wedding of her son Raja Reddy.
