Tension prevailed in Nirmal town of Adilabad district when Hindus and Muslims resorted to pelting stones at each other during a Sri Rama Rathayatra procession on Sunday on the occasion of Sri Rama Navami.
When the procession reached its destination, a temple located near the Vegetable Market, where Masjid Gulzar is also located, a fracas erupted between the procession members and some Muslim youth, resulting in some frenzied stone-pelting.
The police resorted to a lathi charge and lobbed tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. Additional SP Dakshina Murthy and a police constable were injured in the stone pelting.
In-charge SP Vishnu Warriar visited the spot and reviewed the situation. He said that stern action would be initiated against those found responsible for the violent incident. He appealed to all sections of the people to maintain peace in the town.
