Hyderabad | 23rd July 2014
The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee on Wednesday claimed that as many as 76 farmers had committed suicide in the 52-day rule of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi so far.
Speaking to media persons at Gandhi Bhavan, TPCC Kisan Cell Chairman M Kodanda Reddy said that the farmers had killed themselves primarily due to the State Government's failure in waiving the farm loans as promised.
He alleged that of the 76, 19 farmers belonged to Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's native district of Medak.
Reddy said that the State Bank of Hyderabad and Syndicate Bank had already served notices to farmers seeking repayment of loans, and had warned the farmers of confiscation of their properties for failure to repay the loans.
As on December 31, 2013, farmers of Telangana owed Rs 26,684 crores to different banks, Reddy stated. The farmers had taken Rs 20,489 crores as agriculture loans, Rs 2,700 crores as gold loans for farming, and Rs 2,495 crores from different Cooperative Banks.
The TPCC leader said that the TRS Government had taken no action to provide relief to the farmers. He requested the Chief Minister to send written directions to the banks asking them not to harass the farmers over repayment of loans.
He said that the Kharif season had already begun, and that the government should not waste any more time in helping the farmers. (INN)
