1.27 lakh of the 2.9 lakh new tech jobs created in 2022-23 were in the State, Special Chief Secretary of IT Jayesh Ranjan said.
Telangana's IT sector continued to assert its dominance on the national stage, contributing a remarkable 40% of the country's new tech jobs in recent years, claimed Jayesh Ranjan, the Special Chief Secretary of the Department of IT, Electronics and Communications for the Government of Telangana, during his address at the GROWTHX 2025 Summit held today at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) in Madhapur.
Reflecting on the State's IT journey over the past three decades, Ranjan said that the transformation was significant.
He also said that initially perceived predominantly as an IT services hub, Telangana had diversified its portfolio, and that currently IT services accounted for just 30% of the State's software exports, while non-IT services contributed a substantial 70%. He said that that this shift highlighted Telangana's adaptability and its embrace of emerging technologies and sectors.
He also stressed the importance of integrating AI education into foundational levels, suggesting that students be introduced to 21 AI tools over 21 days.
He also addressed concerns about potential job losses due to AI, asserting that while certain traditional roles might evolve, upskilling and adaptability would open new opportunities, and that AI would serve as a catalyst for job creation rather than a threat.
Ranjan added that a pivotal factor in Telangana's growth had been the influx of Global Capability Centres (GCCs). Over the past seven to eight years, more than 70 multinational corporations had chosen Hyderabad for their offshore operations, bringing cutting-edge technologies and projects to the city, he said. Significant portions of Amazon Alexa's development and Google Maps' operations were conducted from Hyderabad, marking the city's evolution into a prominent IT product development hub, he said.
The State's IT sector has showcased robust growth metrics. According to reports, in the fiscal year 2022-23, Telangana's IT exports surged by 31.44%, reaching a new high of Rs 2.41 lakh crore, up from Rs 1.83 lakh crore in the previous fiscal year. This impressive growth has positioned Telangana as a leading contributor to the nation's IT exports. Further, the sector added 1,27,594 new jobs during the same period, bringing the total IT employment in the state to 9,05,715. Given that 2.90 lakh new IT jobs were created nationwide in that period, Telangana accounted for a staggering 44%, underscoring its pivotal role in the national IT landscape.
Reports also state that Telangana aims to double its IT exports to Rs 3 lakh crore and generate over three lakh additional jobs by 2026. The State is also focusing on expanding IT infrastructure beyond Hyderabad, with cities like Warangal emerging as alternative hubs. Initiatives such as training in basic AI for all technology graduates and the establishment of a Rs 1,300-crore startup fund to support over 8,000 startups are underway. These efforts are geared towards fostering innovation, entrepreneurship and sustained growth in the State's IT sector.
