Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy credited Rs 395 crore to 3.95 lakh new beneficiaries under the Jagananna Thodu scheme on Wednesday, as also an interest component of Rs 15.96 crore.
The scheme provides Rs 10,000 each in loans to small and petty traders, vendors and artisans. So far the State has provided Rs 2,011 crore to 15,03,558 families under the scheme to promote self-employment.
The small traders and vendors, who sell their goods on the pavements, in tiny shops and on pushcarts, also generate employment, and the scheme also targets social empowerment in addition to helping them economically.
The Chief Minister said that he had seen the plight of such petty traders, who were routinely exploited by money-lenders and middlemen, and the Jagananna Thodu scheme had evolved from that.
For those who repay loans on time, the State has been taking up the interest burden, and Rs 48.48 crore has been reimbursed to 12.5 lakh families as part of that.
Of the beneficiaries this time, 80% are women or belong to the SC, ST, BC and minority communities, Jagan said.
