2kgs of gold was stolen from an employee of a jewellery store named Kailash & Co., at the Abids General Post Office (GPO) signals on Friday afternoon. This incident occured close to the Abids police station.
According to the police, the Kailash & Co. employee was at the signals, when the 2 culprits came by on a motorbike and snatched the bag from him.
The employee stated that he was ferrying the jewellery to the Kailash & Co. store from the Mayur Kushal Towers, where they were taken for hallmarking.
As the theft of the yellow metal is a high-profile crime, officers higher on the power chain reportedly rushed to Abids to take stock of the situation and conduct an investigation. With 24K and 22K gold priced at Rs. 2,203 and Rs. 2,049 respectively, the total value of the yellow metal stolen could amount to around Rs. 50 lakhs.
The police seem baffled that the theft could have taken place with such ease, as traffic police, more often than not, are found manning the signals.
The police also suspect if the employee himself was an accomplice of the thieves, and are reportedly trying to ascertain the reason behind the employee ferrying 2kgs of gold, alone.
