At least 2 engineering students were killed and 2 others seriously injured in a road mishap which occurred at Eegalapenta village, Amrabad mandal in Mahabubnagar district early on Saturday.
According to Inspector Prabhakar, the victims were identified as K Shilpa and Prithvi. Prabhakar revealed that 112 students of Ganapati Engineering College in Warangal district were on a field tour and had started from their college in 3 minibuses, on Friday evening at around 10:30 pm.
The mishap occurred on Saturday morning at around 7:30 am, when one of the 3 minibuses hit an electricity pole while climbing up the ghat roads on the way to the Srisailam dam project. The impact led to K Shilpa being hurled out of an open window of the bus. The bus, after the impact with the electricity pole started sliding down the steep road. Shilpa came under its wheels. She was killed on the spot.
The crash impact also led to another 21 of the 35 students on board the bus being injured. Prithvi died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Sunnepenta in Kurnool, while Pranay and Lavanya were stated to be critical. 3 other student's hands were fractured while 15 others received minor injuries. The impact of the crash could be gauged by the fact that the electricity pole was uprooted from the ground. Police say that the high-tension electricity wires could have led to more deaths if any vehicle had come in contact with it.
A case has been registered under section 304-A against the bus driver and further investigations are on.
